Thai Embassy’s Foreign Trade Promotion Office (FTPO) released statistics by showing that international trade between Cambodia and Thailand has increased more than 80 percent during the first four months of 2010, compared to the same period last year.

During April 2010, the bilateral trade was estimated to total USD$386 million alone. Exchanged goods with neighboring countries were worth USD$914 million in the year to the end of April, increased 84 percent from USD$497 million for the first four months in 2009.

Lang Seng Hor, market manager for Cambodian Center for Study and Development in Agriculture-CEDAC- was quoted by the Phnom Penh Post as saying that April is traditionally a strong month for trade due to economic spin-offs from agricultural harvests, including crops of rice, corn, cassava and beans.

FTPO showed figures that the total trade between the both nations dropped 22.15 percent to UDS$1.658 billion in 2009, from UDS$2.130 billion in 2008.

Products that Thailand has exported to Cambodian market are petroleum, processed goods, consumer products, building materials, fruits, vegetables and cosmetics. Products that Cambodia extorted Thailand are agricultural products, secondhand garments, recyclable metal and fish.

Last month, Thai foreign ministry sent a not to Cambodian embassy to Thailand by saying that the repair on the monk’s quarters at the pagoda within their territory.

The embassy’s letter followed a similar communiqué written last Friday, in which it denounced accusations that a construction project near the Ta Krabey temple in Oddar Meanchey province had impinged on Thai territory, reported the Post.

Srey Doek, commander of Royal Cambodian Armed Forces Division 3 in Preah Vihear province, said repairs on the dilapidated dormitories at the Wat Keo Sekha Kirisvarak pagoda began about six months ago and took only a few days, according to the Post.

After the contentious arm forces have broken out between Cambodia and Thailand along border near Preah Vihear Temple, Cambodian government take more attention to its arm forces until Prime Minister Hun Sen also paid visit to militaries protecting borders and disputed areas.

The military exercise was done yesterday which was overseen by Minister of Defence Tea Banh in Kampong Chhnang province. There were 200 BM-21 rockets tested but the Premier also said that it is a normal part of military exercise.

The Prime Minister added that Cambodia is not flexing its muscles but it is a work to strengthen the abilities of the military in national defence.

Mr Abhisit said, stating that the Cambodian military drill was unrelated to the current political situation in Thailand, he added that he don’t believe the test is intended to threaten the Thai Military as He understand that it is a normal military exercise.

Ou Virak, president of the Cambodian Center for Human Rights, was quoted by the Phnom Penh Post as saying that he suspected that muscle-flexing was exactly what the government had in mind.

After Cambodian government blasted Google, giant search engine, over the Google Earth map which was “devoid of truth and reality” and called for its immediate removal because it was not internationally recognized.

In response to the letter complained by Cambodia, the Google Inc. said that it would look into a complaint from Cambodia that an online map showing the country’s border with Thailand was wrong, thought it stopped short of saying it would change the document, reported AP.

A day ahead of the first-ever visit to disputed border by prime minister Hun Sen, Cambodia issued a complaint.

Responding Cambodia’s complaint, a letter dated on February 09, signed by Ross LaJeunesse, Google’s head of public policy and government affairs for Asia Pacific, was provided to reporter on Wednesday said that it was carefully reviewing Phnom Penh’s objection but also suggested that it contact Tele Atlas, a mapping company it says provided the border data to the company, reported AP.

“We understand that the governments of both Thailand and Cambodia are pursuing bilateral negotiations to clarify the existing borders between the two countries and we would be happy to review any authoritative border data which the government of Cambodia can provide,” letter read.

In addition, Cambodia wants Google to replace its current map with one the government says was accepted on 1908 by Thailand.

Svay Sitha, secretary of state of the Council of Ministers, was quoted by Reuters as saying that the map is devoid of truth and reality, and professionally irresponsible, if not pretentious.

“We therefore request that you withdraw the already disseminated, very wrong and not internationally recognised map and replace it,” he said.

In 1962 the International Court of Justice in Hague ruled that the 11th-century temple Preah Vihear belongs to Cambodia.

The conflict between Cambodia and Thailand over the border dispute occurred when the UNESCO registered Cambodia’s Preah Vihear as the World Heritage Site on July, 2008 in Quebec, Canada.

Lt-Col Nut Sri-in, commander of Suranaree Task Force Unit 163, earlier Sunday said the fighting took place while a group of Thai Army Rangers were patrolling and confronted Cambodian soldiers who were felling trees in Kantharalak district, SI SA KET province, which borders Cambodia, the news continued.

Following the fugitive prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra was appointed as advisor to prime minister Hun Sen and to Cambodia’s government on October 27, the diplomatic ties between Cambodia and Thailand occurred and the both countries recalled their ambassadors to their own countries.

Recently, the leak of the secret information revealed that the Thai government developed a contingency plan for military action against Cambodia near the disputed areas near Preah Vihear temple.

According to the Nation newspaper, Puea Thai party lawmaker Jatuporn Prompan circulated the document to reporter Saturday, claiming that Thailand was preparing for military action against Cambodia.

Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya sent document dated on Nov 16 to Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, reported the Nation.

Koy Kuong, spokesman for the Cambodia Foreign Ministry, was quoted by the Cambodia Daily as saying that he had only heard of the leaked document through media reports and on the internet.

“Cambodia is ready to solve the problems by all means: politically, legally, bilateral negotiations,” added he.

“It’s our plan to deal with Cambodia, but it’s a normal statement from the government of Thailand – it’s not something like he said, an assassination plan or anything like that,” Chawanon Intharakomansut, secretary to the Thai foreign minister was quoted by the Phnom Penh Post as saying.

“In the worst case, such as a violation of Thai sovereignty or anything resembling the establishment of a government in exile for Thaksin, Thailand would cut diplomatic relations and resort to using military force,” The Nation said.

Thai prime minister Abhisit told the Bangkok post in response to the allegation that “I have no idea where that document came from. But I can assure you that the government will not take any unlawful steps in seeking his [Mr. Thaksin’s] return.”

During the opening remarks at the 30th meeting of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) from August 2 to 6 2009 in Pattaya in Thailand, Heng Samrin, president of the National Assembly called on the ASEAM to participate in resolving the border dispute between Cambodian and Thailand.

The border dispute erupted after Preah Vihear temple was registered as World Heritage Site in July 07, 2008 by UNESCO in Canada. Thai troops have entered illegally within Cambodian territory until there were arm conflicts between the both countries.

“Heng Samrin said that ASEAN should not keep quiet. It has to help countries that have disputes with one another, including border disputes,” said Cheam Yeap, who also participated in the AIPA, quoted by the Phnom Penh Post as saying.

After the meeting, Thai National Assembly president Chai Chidchob invited Cambodian delegations to stay two more days in Thailand.
