Private firm to invest in $1.6 m rice factory
Cambodia’s rice has been exported into international markets such as Europe. Recently, Laurent Import Export Company plans to build a rice factory worth US$1.6 million to polish and package rice for export in Thma Koul district in Battambang province. it is expected that the factory will process at least 300 tonnes of rice per day.
A factory will start to be constructed in August and be completed in December. After building the factory, the company hopes that it will be able to export milled rice in big amount to international markets.
So far, there are 10 companies being constructed and being processing in this province. The total of 760,000 tonnes of paddy in 2009 and 2010 was harvested by farmers.
Pho Sambo, head of the Industry Office of Battambang’s provincial Department of Industry, Mines and Energy, was quoted by the Phnom Penh Post as saying that “we support all projects to build such factories in the province, both at present and in the future, because we want our potential fragrant-rice products to be exported in larger quantities in the future.”
Lim Bun Heng was quoted by the Post as saying that his company processed and sold 14,000 tonnes of rice in 2009, 4,000 tonnes for export. The company plans to process about 25,000 tonnes of rice in 2010, he said, with 10,000 tonnes slated for export.
