NA president called on ASEAN to resolve border dispute
During the opening remarks at the 30th meeting of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) from August 2 to 6 2009 in Pattaya in Thailand, Heng Samrin, president of the National Assembly called on the ASEAM to participate in resolving the border dispute between Cambodian and Thailand.
The border dispute erupted after Preah Vihear temple was registered as World Heritage Site in July 07, 2008 by UNESCO in Canada. Thai troops have entered illegally within Cambodian territory until there were arm conflicts between the both countries.
“Heng Samrin said that ASEAN should not keep quiet. It has to help countries that have disputes with one another, including border disputes,” said Cheam Yeap, who also participated in the AIPA, quoted by the Phnom Penh Post as saying.
After the meeting, Thai National Assembly president Chai Chidchob invited Cambodian delegations to stay two more days in Thailand.
