International adoption law passed by the Council of Ministries

According to a statement released on Friday, the Council of Ministers passed the proposed International Adoption Law. The goal of the legislation is to ensure transparency and security in the international adoption process.

The statement read that “the draft law’s purpose is to regulate the principles, conditions and procedures for international adoption, with the goal of guaranteeing the protection of children’s rights and interests.”

The new legislation would be in keeping with the protections for children outlined in that agreement. This law will be sent to the National Assembly for approval within the next week or two.

Cambodia suspended an approval of International adoption law in 2001 due to the concerns over child trafficking and the lack of adequate legal mechanisms to control the practices. Cambodia is a signatory of the Hague Convention on Intercountry Adoption.
