A 35-year-old Thai man, Salavout, was arrested by police Sunday in O’Chrou district’s Poipet commune for illegally living in Cambodia and drawing image of Angkor Wat in the concrete in front of his rental home’s bathroom.
His act constituted “looking down” on Angkor Wat and was “against the will of Cambodian people,” a police official said, a penal crime under Cambodian law, quoted by the VOA as saying.
According to the police’s investigation, Salavout is living in Cambodia since 1998 working as construction worker. He entered Cambodia through the Poipet checkpoint without passport and visa. He will be sent to provincial court for looking down on the temple, which was listed as World Heritage Site.
Cambodian people who are living near his house spotted the image of Angkor Wat temple drew on the floor of his home and then they complained to local police, until approaching to apprehend him.
It was because of the rumor of Thai movie star to belittle Angkor Wat temple, there were anti-Thai riots in Phnom Penh damaging Thai-owned companies and the Thai embassy.
