Miss landmine pageant blocked by government
On Sunday the ministry of social affairs had issued a decree to ban Miss Landmine contest, which will open in Cambodia next month under support from the ministry of social affairs, veterans and youth rehabilitation, the ministry of women’s affairs, the Cambodian mine action and Cambodian disabled people’s organization. It is hopeful that the contest will help raise awareness about the continuing risk of landmine around the world.
“I believe it is a blow, not only for disabled rights, but also for the self-esteem of the women taking part and the self-esteem of disabled people across the country,” organizer Morten Traavik said after the meeting quoted by the Phnom Penh Post.
21 contestants from all provinces, except Ratanakiri, Koh Kong and Kratie, will join in the contest. The photo of contestants will be on display at exhibition and a fashion magazine. In addition the public will be able to participate in voting the winner on the website.
